During the election of 1872 Liberal Republicans pushed the Amnesty act in May through Congress. It pardoned most confederates which allowed most southerners to vote and get elected in office again. Lead to more favor of the democratic party. Grant still won by a wide margin in the election of 1872.
Bad Grant Administration -Southern government were corrupt
-Carpetbaggers took advantage of African Americans and whites
- Southerners tried to control all freed African Americans
-Ku Klux Klan and other groups tried to suppress African Americans
-1870 congress passed several laws to strop the Ku Klux Klan
-Grants secretary of war William Belknap was impeached because of bribes
